Heathfield Updated February 07, Do you think you need a fraternization policy for your workplace? Also called a dating policy, a workplace romance policy, or a non-fraternization policy, many employers avoid them because they believe that an employee’s private life is just that—private. Here’s the problem with this position.
Employees want some direction about what is acceptable workplace behavior. They don’t want to unknowingly cross some secret boundary line and injure their work status and career. In-the-know employees understand that some policies in their workplace are unwritten, but all employees are expected to understand workplace norms. And, a fraternization policy is even more significant for employers. Some employee behavior is inappropriate and your employees need to be informed of and trained in inappropriate behavior before you can take action to deal with an adverse situation that affects your workplace.
You would think that employee friendships and employee romantic relationships are private and only affect the private lives of employees. If you think this, you are wrong. A dating relationship—specially those gone wrong—can have a terribly adverse effect on your employees and your workplace harmony. Over my years of consulting with clients, I have experienced dating couples screaming at each other or arguing in the middle of the workplace – at the top of their lungs.
It’s a delicate balancing act. On one hand, you’ve worked hard all year and you’re ready for a well-deserved evening of blowing off steam with your coworkers. Employee oriented, forward thinking workplaces recognize that one of the places that employees meet their eventual spouse or partner is at work. Workplace friendships flow naturally into personal lives.
Families become friends through their work connection. These relationships make sense because the commonalities that coworkers share such as proximity to the workplace, shared interests, similar ages, children about the same age, the actual work and customers, and similar incomes, encourage friendships and potential romantic relationships.
With so much in common, friendships and romantic relationships are a natural outcome of the environment. Yes, relationships can also go awry and result in friction and conflict at work.
October 30, 1: In a column for Bloomberg Businessweek, Cook wrote: Many LGBT workers report feeling exhausted and distracted at work from all the time and energy they spend hiding their identities, according to HRC. More often then not your colleagues have already made assumptions about your sexual orientation, especially if you never say anything about your personal life.
Start by checking whether your state has a non-discrimination law that would protect you from being fired, harassed, or discriminated against. Currently 21 states have such laws in place regarding sexual orientation, and 17 of those for gender identity as well.
Every company needs to consider a policy on workplace dating. Without a clear policy, an office relationship can lead to charges of sexual harassment and legal.
It can be tricky. We didn’t meet on the job — we were dating for almost four years before we started working together which, by the way, wasn’t planned … long story. But for about 11 months, we sat three cubes apart from one another and kept our relationship under wraps. Nobody knew we were a couple. My answer to all three: But they happen all the time, and when they do, there are three possible outcomes: Remember that coworker I dated?
We are getting married in two months. If you decide it is, there are a few “rules” you’ll want to follow to ensure things don’t go awry:

We consider respondents to be employed if they are working or with job, not at work.
Company policies on dating in the workplace might kick in if that’s the case. If it’s just a roommate thing, it might have already been discussed with the boss’s boss, who might be okay with it.
Anyway, if I see coworkers on dating sites, I think the polite thing to do is just ignore it and move along, so I was not super into the fact that this guy messaged me but I figured he was just being kind of socially obtuse. I read and did not respond to the last message. Or would it be better to just block him and pretend it never happened? It might be useful in general to know how to stop an inappropriate interaction like this in the future, so what would you have done?

Whether or not there are policies forbidding them, office relationships happen. Dana Brownlee, president of professional training development company Professionalism Matters , advises against initiating a romance with your manager, or, likewise, with anyone who reports to you directly or indirectly.
